Attack
and Defence Be Simple
I huddle myself up when I block the opponent's attack and spread myself out when I hit him. Huddling up and spreading out are natural simple motions as well as they compose every usual ones. But I can find the most effective attack and defence in them. And I approach my opponent, then just raise up and drop down my body, or just turn round and round. These bending, stretching and turning are also natrual simple motions as well as necessary elements of motions. Because of this simpleness the opponent's attack cannot reach me and he rather ruins of himself. In this manner, the good motions of Taekwondo does not show themselvesas something special and the principles of the attack and the defence are same and simple in them, thus each doesn't differ from the another. Then what is it that makes Taekwondo different from non-Taekwondo?
The answer can be summed up in a thing that a good motion of Taekwondo just differs from another one of daily life in that it includes nothing unnecessary for my life. In another words, the simple principle of Taekwondo required in attack and defence in that you should only the most necessary movements. Accordingly, a right motion of Taekwondo changes from a movement to another with nothing excrescent at all between them. Then every part of myself will be kept in its proper place at this time. All of these will adapt yourself perfectly to everything.
Every skill of Taekwondo is simple in its essence because it is composed of only necessary movements. Therefore it is desirable that a skill of attack and defence is simple in Taekwondo. Regardless of whether you use complex or simple skill to control over your opponent you will get the same result if you win. The complex, thus difficult skill is required when you cannot surpass him only with simple one. In the case that a complex skill were used against the opponent when a simple skill is also enough it would not mean a virtuous skill any more but rather than a bad one that exhausted your power with difficulty. The mellowness of Taekwondo and its profound beauty are to be embodied in that the simplicity of a simple motion is accomplished fully to be connected to <Do> and to be realized in that the simple principle in a brilliant skill is harmonized in a complex motion.
This motion of Taekwondo is nothing more rather than that of daily life, which has been repeated and skilled in the long process, therefore, everything unnecessary is to disappear worn out. Even a most harsh stone would get sleek if ground for long time. Taekwondo forms this clean motion through the long training with many repetition and provide the calm mind of usual through the long self-overcoming and self-discipline.
