Let me introduce
the rough contents of this writing briefly.
This writing is made up of 8 divisions 64 chapters in all. It would not be proper to explain the content of each chapter. Thus the content of each division will be presented.
Division 1 "Harmony" (Chapter 1-6) explains the definition
of Taekwondo and the concept of Do(
)
and Life in Taekwondo philosophy. This part discusses the philosophical foundation
of the philosophical principles of Taekwondo, which may be the most abstract
and difficult part for almost people. If it were too difficult to understand,
you can skip this part at first and come back after understanding another parts.
Division 2 "Principles" (Chapter 7-13) explains concretely the more immediate concepts to Taekwondo; The enemy and the opponent, thinking with the whole of self, the meaning of practicing Taewkondo, the interrelationship between the three essential materials and the change. It can be said this explanation provide a theory where Taekwondo is connected directly to the philosophy. Accordingly this part will be most of Taekwondo while it may seem to be still abstact and difficult. The ways of Heaven, Earth, and Man is going to be explained from here on.
Division 3 "Three Essential Materials" (Chapter 14-22) investigates the more concrete philosophical principles in the motions of Taekwondo. Since this division was named "Three Essential Materials" this part explains principles of Taekwondo comprehensively according to the scheme of three essential materials. And this part also explains the various aspects of the good motions of Taekwondo, which include detailed explanations on the spiritual principles as same as those of motions. And this part explains that the ways of three essential materials when coupled make distance, tide and balance each by each, in addition to the explanations on the good distance, tide, and balance.
Division 4 "On Skills" (Chapter 23-29) explains the concrete principles and some important factors of Taekwondo skills. I compare the ideal motion of Taekwondo to that of water in this explanation, and explains that the subject of a motion should control with rhythm the motions of himself and his opponent, in addition to how to find out the blind point of the opponent, the regular spots of vital points, the basic skills of attacking and defending in Taekwondo.
Division 5 "Attack and Defence" (Chapter 30-39) explains the attacking and defending skills with its principle. This part will provide the standards of making a pose and a motion, how to control one's own mind when he continues his movements, the source of the powerful attack and the principle of the attacking skill, the ideal method of uniting attacks and defences and its principle and so on. And chapter 39 will explain the main principle of managing the whole fighting as continuity of attacks and defences; the explanation of the ultimate strategy.
Division 6 is "How to Weapon" (Chapter 40-47). Here, the "weapon" refers to every kind of tools used in attacks and defences of Taekwondo. It implies the weapon in an abstract dimension. This conception presupposes implicitly that the principles of Taekwondo are not confined within using the hands and feet, but can be applied to using swords and guns and even to controling military and political power. And the beauty of Taekwondo, which is explained in this division, does not imply the mere epistimological one but the comprehensive beauty that we can experience in our motions. So I hope this concept can also be applied to dances.
Division 7 "On Poomsae" (Chapter 48-55) presents the philosophical foundation of Poomsae that constitutes a main training process. The implication of poomsae, the right training process and the explanations on basic motions, which compose poomsaes, are presented. Those contents explain the significance of basic motions, their principles required in training of those basic motions and the reasons for them, based on the ways of three essential elements.
Division 8 is "The Basics" (Chapter 56-64). Since the implications of basic motions already have been explained in the division 7, the implication of the basics means the foundation of Taekwondo as the principle. This division explains the process of the growth you experience in the Taekwondo trainings and its meaning, and then the spiritual and physical implication of beginning the training and its difficulty. And the whole will be explained in the relations with the whole life. The foundation of Taekwondo is the man's life.
